Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 Release Wave 1: What’s New and What to Enable First
AI Is No Longer Assistive It’s Operational
The 2026 Release Wave 1 (April–September 2026) is Business Central’s most significant release in years. AI agents now handle real business processes autonomously reading invoices, processing orders, preparing approvals while Copilot becomes smarter, more controllable, and easier to extend. Everything is included in your existing license at no extra cost.
Here is what is new and where to start.

1. Autonomous AI Agents The Headline Change
Wave 1 expands Business Central’s autonomous agents AI that takes action, not just suggestions, with human oversight at key decision points.
Payables Agent
Reads incoming invoices, matches vendors and GL accounts based on historical patterns, and prepares approvals automatically. Finance teams shift from processing to reviewing. It also categorizes processed emails in shared inboxes so nothing is duplicated.
Sales Order Agent
Handles sales order workflows end-to-end from receipt through confirmation reducing manual coordination in high-volume order environments.
Custom AL Agents
Developers can now build industry-specific agents using AL code, triggered by your own business events. Think of Microsoft’s default agents as templates AL lets you extend them for your specific processes.
Transparency and Control
- AI activity visible on every document with ‘Created by AI’ indicators
- Stop all agent activity instantly critical for testing or halting unintended automation
AI adoption depends on trust. Wave 1’s transparency controls let organizations expand agent scope gradually as confidence grows.
2. Copilot: Smarter, More Extensible, Better Connected
- Model Context Protocol (MCP) enables Copilot Studio agents to interact directly with Business Central data. Available now in version 27.1+. Removes the biggest barriers for cross-system agent development.
- Automated report generation – run reports across all dimension values automatically, or combine multiple reports into one PDF. Eliminates hours of manual work every close cycle.
- Centralized Outlook task pane – all agent-generated tasks visible in a single pane in shared inboxes. Nothing gets missed or duplicated between human and AI processing.
- Copilot extensibility – developers can build custom Copilot skills for scenarios Microsoft’s out-of-the-box features don’t cover.
3. Finance, Supply Chain and Power Platform
Finance
- AI-assisted bookkeeping – agents handle routine data entry and categorization based on transaction history, reducing errors in high-volume financial processing.
- Subscription revenue analytics – new app fills a long-standing gap in native reporting for businesses with recurring revenue.
- International tax compliance – enhanced management tools for global tax requirements across Business Central’s near-global country coverage.
Supply Chain
- AI-driven warehouse picking – intelligent picking sequences reduce travel time and error rates in warehouse operations.
- Inventory rebalancing – automated suggestions for redistributing stock across locations based on demand and lead times.
- Electronic document exchange – expanded e-document support for compliance and faster document processing.
Power Platform
- Power Automate agent features – self-healing flows that detect and correct their own failures, reducing admin maintenance burden.
- Power Apps generative pages – AI-generated app pages that surface Business Central data without full app development from scratch.
4. What to Enable First ?
Enable now – Payables Agent (test in sandbox first), MCP support if building custom agents, and AI transparency indicators to build team confidence.
Plan this month – Automated report generation for your most manual monthly reports, Sales Order Agent review, and subscription revenue analytics if applicable.
Test before production – Custom AL agents and Copilot extensions require sandbox validation against your real data before enabling for all users.
